Authorship of Hebrews
Over the many centuries the author of Hebrews has been the debate of many Christian discussions, whether Paul the Apostle or another wrote the letter. Some possible names out of a list of many will be considered: Paul, Peter, and Luke.Let us begin with Paul the Apostle. Clement of Rome quoted that Paul wrote it in the Hebrew language, and Luke translated it to the Greek language. Thus many Christians consider this to prove his authorship. Other evidence suggests that Peter wrote to the same Hebrew audience in his epistles. And Peter is referring to the book of Hebrews written by Paul in Second Peter 3:15-16. Also a reference to Timothy is made in Hebrews 13:23, a known associate of Paul. And many believe this proves his authorship.
Peter is also a candidate for authorship. The missions of Peter and Paul have one major difference. Peter was sent to the circumcised Jews and Paul to the uncircumcised Gentiles in Galatians 2:7-9. Also Peters writing style in his epistles are very similar to the phrases fond in the book of Hebrews.
Luke, Paul’s personal physician is also another notable consideration. Since he spent so much time with Paul, it would not be farfetched for him to know the recipients of the letter. Also the author was very skilled in the Greek language, and Luke matches this style in the book of Luke and Acts.To me the best evidence is found in the book it’s self. Hebrews 2:3-4 suggest the writer learned from those who witnessed Christ Himself. That rules out Peter, and Paul wrote that no man showed him he learned “by revelation of Jesus Christ” (Galatians 1:11). Out of the three mentioned above, this leaves Luke to be the possible author. Now this is my opinion. Who do you think wrote the epistle?
