“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” (I Corinthians 3:16)
Jesus told his disciples, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth...” (John 14: 16-17). Thank God this promise has been fulfilled in the lives of believers. The Holy Spirit now indwells all who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Because of this you “are not your own.” (I Corinthians 6:19). Many Christians however fail to realize this important Biblical doctrine.
The temple of God is found where the Spirit of God dwells. A spiritual church is not because the building, the preacher, or the music. It is because God indwells the people who attend. Our text teaches that “the spirit of God dwelleth in you”. This should stir our hearts to conviction. We would not speak crude and vile language in the church. But do we as professing Christians speak the devils language on Monday? One would not be drunk with alcohol at our Sunday evening service. But would he on Saturday night? We are the Temple. God the Holy Spirit lives in the heart of the saved. But often we are on our best spiritual behavior at church. “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God” and that we bring God home with us! “Know ye not that our bodies are the members of Christ?” (I Corinthians 6:15). “What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you...” (I Corinthians 6:19).
Knowing this decorate your Temple with holy living. Let its halls be filled with Godly worship. Allow it to be a house of prayer and devotion. Sanctify and wash your temple so that Christ will be noticed instead of clutter and disorder. Consecrate it for the work of the Gospel. Let the light of Christ fill every dark and sinful closet. Give Him every key so His presence is allowed in day or night. Break sinful habits that hinder your trust in Him. Invite Christ to make a small scourge and drive out covetousness and greed. Permit your eyes to look Heavenly upon the throne and keep it from the ditch of sin. Pray to be a “vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.” (II Timothy 2:21).
